Big finish to the BACT Weekend Pennant with double-headers in all divisions 😰. To cut to the chase, Canberra Bowling Club Cobras 🐍 have made the finals in 3 of our 4 divisions 🥳🤗. The 1s finished on top of the ladder 🥇 and host Queanbeyan Bowlers Association at the SnakePit 🐍 on Saturday in the Major Semi-final. The 5s finished second on their ladder 🤩 and are likely to have a trip to the northern Canberra suburb of Goulburn, also for the Major Semi-final. The 2s also booked a finals berth in a knock-out round 10 match against Belconnen 👏 and will play somewhere north-east of here in the cut-throat Minor Semi-final.
The 1s guaranteed the minor premiership on Saturday’s round 9 with a comprehensive 76-53 (10-2) win over Queanbeyan at the SnakePit → ironically the same teams to take place at the same venue this Saturday 🤨. The win was led by – and we’re concentrating on the thirds this week – big margins on the ‘Errol’ Flynn O’Shaughnessy and ‘quite assassin’ AJ Roberts’ rinks; 12 and 14 shots respectively. The final rink of ‘awesome’ Jess Hogan went down by just 3 in a shoot-out. Backing up on Sunday was a tough gig and if the 1s have a setback this year, round 10 was the time to do it! The 1s went down 46-58 (2-10) to the Creek, salvaging the 2pts via the quite assassin and his wizard skip with a 2 shot win 🤩.
The 2s had a big weekend and a tough final three rounds to the campaign. Saturday didn’t go as planned out at Yass as the team could only salvage the 1pnt through ‘bushranger’ Manny Brookman’s rink with an 18 each tie. Going down overall 52-65 (1-11). This led to a crunch round 10 match against the Belconnen Boomers out in the ‘burbs – where the kangaroos 🦘 roam free; winner through to the finals, loser out ⚠️. Two stirring rink wins by Horace ‘Bula’ Williams’ and Cliff ‘the gazelle’ Gilbert rinks got the 2s through to another week and a shot at glory 🤙. Rink wins were 12 and 15 shots respectively 😍 76-53 overall (10-2).
The 5s also had a bit of mis-adventure on the Sunday 👉🏼 what did these Cobras get up to Saturday night⁉️ Firstly Saturday, the 5s kept their minor premiership chances alive with a 82-40 (12-0) smashing of Canberra North at the SnakePit 🤩. All rinks won but it was the ‘mini’ Mina Bannerman rink doing the damage, winning by 23 shots. The Melda ‘silk’ Fowler also got up by 15 and Dave ‘lion’ Kimber up by 4. Sunday was not a great result down at Vikings, going down 41-62 (2-10) → 2pts salvaged by the Bannerman rink (up 2 shots).
Our 6s have had a good campaign developing, but ran out of puff on the final weekend, going down 51-79 (2-10) to Queanbeyan and 37-65 (0-12) on the trip to the Big Merino. Nevertheless, a positive experience and season for many new bowlers 👏.
